Abstract
Towards a (linguistic) speech rhythm couched
in a coupled-oscillator model
The study of durational patterns of utterances in a language is
viewed under the framework of a coupled-oscillator dynamical model of speech
rhythm production. This model has two main components: a two-coupled-oscillator
model (a syllabic and a phrase stress oscillator) and an integrated gestural
score specifying the coordination between abstract gestures. The phrase
stress oscillator deals with the metrical component of the model by delimitating
stress groups, the syllabic oscillator imposes a vowel flow continuum along
the entire utterance, and the integrated gestural score is the domain where
non-derivational lexical contrasts take place. In the model framework, two
techniques allowing the systematisation of rhythm typology research under
a dynamical perspective are presented. The first technique is the automatic
detection of stress group boundaries from the analysis of patterns of syllable-sized
durations, and the second is the estimation of model parameters from the inversion
of the equations
describing period coupling.

Abstract
Syllable-timing in Brazilian Portuguese: against Roy Major
This paper reintroduces the discussion about stress-timing in Brazilian
Portuguese (BP). It begins by surveying some phonetic and phonological issues
raised by the syllable- vs stress-timed dichotomy which culminated with the
emergence of the pcenter
notion. Strict considerations of timing of V-V units and stress groups
are taken into account to analyze the long term coupling of two basic oscillators
(vowel and stress flow). This coupling allows a two-parameter characterization
of language rhythms (coupling strength and speech rate) revealing that BP
utterances present a high-degree of syllabletiming. A comparison with other
languages, including European Portuguese, is also presented. The results analyzed
indicate that Major’s arguments for considering Portuguese (sic) as stress-timing
are misleading.

Abstract
The place of the metrical foot and stress in dynamical speech rhythm
modelling
The reassessment of some key linguistic notions such as (metrical)
foot and stress and stressing are viewed under the framework of a dynamical
model of speech rhythm production. This model has two main components: a two-coupled-oscillator
model (a syllabic and a phrase stress oscillator) and an integrated gestural
score specifying acousticarticulatory coordinations between abstract gestures.
The phrase stress oscillator deals with the metrical component of the model
by delimitating stress groups (feet), the syllabic oscillator imposes a vowel
flow continuum along the entire utterance, and the integrated gestural score
it is the domain where non-derivational lexical contrasts take place.

Abstract
The building of speaking machine as a place for integrating speech science
and technology
This work supports the view of an integration between speech sciences
and technologies by the building of a talking machine.
Speech production modeling is sketched within speech science framework
with special reference to speech synthesis research. The implications of
this area of research for teaching are also discussed.

Abstract
Speaking machines as linguistic tools: for a humanism éclairé
This work presents important landmarks for a history of speech synthesis
and of the use of speech synthesis for linguistic research. It traces the
fascination for the human voice since the most remote times, passing by the
century of the automata that culminates with Kempelen’s speaking machine,
and presents the first speech synthesizers and speech synthesis systems. By
showing the pluridisciplinary character of this unique research adventure,
this paper aims at defending at least one single thesis: the building of a
speaking machine is an integral part of the humanistic tradition, and whatever
the original affiliation of its builder may be, his/her work must be characterized
by a tolerant attitude vis-à-vis the disciplines concerned.

Abstract
Is it possible to integrate discreteness and continuity in a model of speech
rhythm production?
A model of speech rhythm production is proposed that is able to
explain the differenfes found between the durational patterns of stress-
and syllable-timed languages from strict considerations of timing. This is
possible from a two-parameter characterisation of Brazilian Portuguese V-toV
duration patterns within stress groups. The aprameters are speech rate (measured
in terms of V-to-V units per unit of time) and the coupling strength between
two oscillators (syllabic and stress group oscillators), which act as a
cognitive pacemaker whose pace is the vowel onset succession entrained by
the beats of the stress group oscillator. Differences in amount of coupling
strength seem to explain differences in rhythmic typology. A link to lexical
processing is also suggested here.
